Cussin' Wednesdays

This happens all the time at the end of comics conventions, where I'll say bye to fellow webcartoonists only to end up waiting for the crosswalk with them or walking back to the same hotel. AWKWARD???

If you want any QC merchandise for Christmas you best act fast! The final deadlines are rapidly approaching!

See you tomorrow.

Spinal Tap Amps

Wow, that's less than $200 per ... uh ... that's a good deal!

I drank what?

This evening I was a visitor to the Caroline town board meeting. You see, they're building a new town office building (next to the current town office/courthouse). They want to put in an actual phone system instead of having separate lines for each office. (Right now if you call the clerk but need to talk to the supervisor, you have to hang up and call the supervisor. They can't transfer the call.)

I colleague of mine is on the town board, and he knew I was doing this new-fangled phone stuff, so he asked me to take a look at what they're doing and give my opinion.

I did that, and also gave a loosely-sketched quote of what I thought an asterisk-based phone system would cost. And expressed willingness to install it (for a fee) and support it for them.

On the one hand, my price was vastly cheaper than the local vendor who does this for a living, and quoted a proprietary IP-based phone system. On the other hand, I don't have 18 techs on call 24x7, or 35 years experience.

I don't know which way they'll go, but it was an interesting experience either way.

That hadn't occurred to me!

One side effect of the P&C supermarkets closing in a couple of months is that we'll need somewhere new to buy trash tags, as pointed out in [info]ithaca_ny a moment ago. At least that person should be able to go across the street and get theirs at Tops. Unless someone decides they want to open a new supermarket at East Hill Plaza, I won't be able to do much convenient shopping on the way home any more!

My guess is the Rite-Aid across the street, which has always had some boxed and canned food, a frozen food case, and some milk and juice next to the beer, will pick up some of the slack, but I'm guessing they won't bother adding any fresh (read "more perishable") food to their lineup. (Actually, the Rite-Aid that used to be in the Triphammer Mall added milk and eggs when the A&P closed about eight years ago.)

What I'm really hoping is that Tops will buy the East Hill Plaza supermarket and operate it. They seem far more likely to be interested in running a smallish store than Wegmans, which has replaced nearly all of its non-monstrous stores with bigger ones over the last several years.

Do Not Cross Her

I kept cracking up while I was drawing the third row of panels. Hopefully you find it similarly amusing.

I am proud to announce that as of Monday afternoon, Cristi and I are the proud owners of a brand-new house! I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you, because without your support this never would have happened. I have been tremendously lucky to have such supportive readers, and I will be eternally thankful for your patronage and generosity. You've enabled me to support myself through QC for the past six years, and I promise I will continue to do my absolute best with the comic in return. So once again, thank you. You guys are the best.

Post T-Day Hockey

Well after the holiday break we're back on the ice tonight... and still hunting for that elusive first win. Earlier game tonight so it's throwing my schedule off a bit. 7:30 at the Rink. Maybe we can stop tying this team and actually beat them tonight. Here's to hoping!

Just imagine…

Harry Chapin was many things, with a hefty dose of political activism included with his musical talent. He touched on a number of political issues over the years, but the one he kept coming back to, again and again, was hunger. “There’s enough food to feed everyone on this planet twice over. Why, why, why are people going hungry?”

This time of year, Harry would always talk about Thanksgiving food drives, when schools would ask kids to bring in canned goods and other food to share with the hungry. “Just imagine,” Harry would suggest, a principal who would stand up after a successful food drive and after the holiday and say “What we’re gonna talk about is ‘What are those people gonna eat next week?’”

Harry’s top charity was World Hunger Year, an organization he helped create in 1975.

People are hungry all year. Thanks for remembering to share what you can, when you can.
